Gender
Quota
“Women
doctors stay in the medical practice and contribute significantly
at all levels of
health profession.
Therefore there is no justification for the quota that unjustly restricts
the entry of deserving women into the medical degree course in Singapore.
We call for the immediate abolishment of this inequitable practice.”
The
motion above was passed by the House at the “Women in Healthcare
Symposium” organised by the AWDS on August 19 2000 at the
KKH Auditorium which was attended by the DMS, MOHThe symposium
presented
the results of an earlier survey conducted by AWDS asking them
about their levels of satisfaction, career decisions and reasons
for leaving
medicine and general feedback.
The
AWDS pursued the results of the survey and presented the issue
of gender inequity to Parliament
and this resulted in the eventual
abolishment of the gender quota implemented on female entrants
to the medical faculty in NUS in the year 2002.
