I Women Forum:
Be Informed, Intelligent and Inspiring
Singapore,
9 March 2006 – More than two hundred women received
free HIV, Candida and Carotenoid Antioxidants screening tests at
the I Women health forum on 11 March 2006. Held in conjunction with
the International Women’s Day 2006, the event was organised
by the Association of Women Doctors Singapore.
Targeting at women of all ages, the three-hour forum
(from 2pm to 5pm) held at the Meritus Mandarin Hotel, aims to heighten
the awareness of all women-related health issues so as to allow members
of the public to be more well-informed and intelligent and thus,
be an inspiration to those around them. Inherently, the association
hopes to empower women by providing the participants of the forum
with more health information so they can make wiser and healthier
choices in their lifestyles and thus, improving their quality of
lives. Members of AWDS also manage to showcase their profession and
talents to the public.
Chairperson
of the forum and Vice President of the Association, Dr Ann Tan
said, “The forum was enriching and thought-provoking
as our speakers were knowledgeable, experienced and well-known professionals
in the medical field. The topics which emphasised on real-life health
problems which trouble most women, drew the crowd to the forum. Cancer
and genetics is a controversial and sensitive topic but there is
a need to increase awareness and educate women about cancer because
it will have a direct impact on these women and their children and
will prevent a lot of unwanted pain and suffering if they are more
aware of this lethal disease”.
According to statistics from the Singapore Cancer Registry, Cancer
is one of the leading causes of death in Singapore and the 3 major
cancers of the female genital tract, specifically, cervical, ovarian
and uterine cancer are among the most commonly occurring female cancers.
Besides cancer
and genetics, the event also presented interesting topics including “Women’s Moods, Men & Menses”, “Aesthetics
of the Face & Body” and “Women Sports & Wellness”.
The Association will like to thank all members, speakers and all
who have rendered their assistance and support one way or another.
