30 Jan 2010 : AWDS Self Defence Workshop for needy women (in collaboration with MSD) from Star Shelter, Casa Raudha Women’s Shelter & Pertapis Centre For Women and Girls
There are only 4 women shelters in Singapore. This workshop helped 3 of them. AWDS empowered these 16 women (aged 12 years to 60 plus) by getting Mr Aaron le Boutillier to conduct a hands-on 2 hour course on “break-away” tactics to help them extricate themselves from abusive spouses. MSD’s partnership and support of this initiative not only empowered these women physically and emotionally, but served to educate them on defence against sexually transmittable diseases like the human papilloma virus (HPV), of which certain strains can lead to cervical, vulvar & vaginal cancers. This helped achieve a greater aim of improving the health of the needy by continuing medical education in the field of Human Papillomavirus and cervical cancer education in Singapore. (Casa Raudha is a new shelter for abused Muslim women. (www.casaraudha.org). Pertapis is an Approved Home and an Approved School under the Children and Young Persons Act, an Approved Institution under the Probation of Offenders Act, and A Place of Safety under the Women's Charter. It helps youth in need between the ages of twelve and twenty one. (www.pertapis.org.sg).
